Having a car gives you the freedom to set your own schedule, avoid the hassle of coordinating with taxi services and of course, avoid those hefty taxi rates.

From our experience, a car rental in Providenciales simply helps you make the most of your time on the island.

Do You Need A Car To Get Around Turks And Caicos

No, you don’t NEED a car to get around Turks and Caicos.

We understand that every traveler's needs are different. And while we stand by our recommendation to rent a car for those looking to explore Turks and Caicos extensively, it's worth noting that you don't need a car to enjoy your Turks and Caicos vacation.

Some of you may prefer the simplicity and relaxation of staying close to your accommodation, where the essentials are within walking distance or a quick taxi journey away.

Grace Bay, in particular, is well equipped for visitors, offering top class dining options and leisure activities within a short walk or taxi ride.

For those content with soaking up the sun on the beach, indulging in local cuisine at nearby restaurants, and enjoying excursions out of Grace Bay, renting a car isn’t necessary.

Rental Car Requirements In Turks And Caicos

A valid driver's license is required along with a major credit card.

The minimum rental age is 25, with some companies allowing scooter rentals from age 21.

It is said that some of the local car rentals in Providenciales will rent cars to those aged 21. This is not standard so please, if you are renting a car at this age, double check that your contract will not hold you liable for being under the standard age of 25 should anything happen to you or your vehicle.

Car Rental Options In Turks And Caicos

Both local and international car rental companies operate in Turks and Caicos, offering a selection of vehicle types to accommodate couples and group travelers alike.

Local Turks and Caicos car rentals provide standard services and competitive rates, while international brands offer the familiarity many travelers appreciate. However, it’s important to note, international brands in Turks and Caicos are usually local companies licensed to use global brand names, which means they operate independently.

Regardless of which rental company you choose, we always advise checking reviews for both local and international agencies to ensure the best option for your group.

Availability Of Options During High Season

Vehicle availability can be a challenge during the high season, with demand peaking for all types of vehicles. Booking well in advance is recommended to secure your preferred choice at a reasonable rate.

This is especially true for specialty vehicles like Jeep Wranglers or luxury SUVs, which are typically high in demand but are limited in supply.

Rental Car Rates In Turks And Caicos

On average, car rental rates on Providenciales start at around $40.00 USD (before fees) per day, but this amount can vary depending on the type of vehicle you choose and the rental period.

It's important to note that the lowest rates advertised online often don't include all taxes and fees, which can significantly increase the final price. This is pretty standard for any destination so just be sure to double check if there will be any extra fees at pick up.

Additional Rental Car Fees to Be Aware Of

Beyond the base rental rate and standard additional fees such as license recovery fees, airport concession fees and liability insurance, several additional fees can affect the total cost of renting a car in Turks and Caicos:

  • Cleaning and Sand Fees: Some companies may charge extra for cleaning, especially if the car is returned with sand inside, a common occurrence on the island.
  • Insurance Options: While basic insurance is usually included, you might want to consider additional coverage for peace of mind. However, this will increase the overall cost.
  • Airport Pick up and Drop off: Convenient but sometimes comes with additional fees, though companies like Grace Bay Car Rentals, Island Life Jeeps and Scooter Bobs offer fast airport services without extra charges.

It's always important to familiarize yourself with your rental agreement and contract. Take a few minutes to review your rental contract to clarify any questions you may have about insurance coverage, mileage limits, and other policies.

Types Of Vehicles You Can Rent In Turks And Caicos

Providenciales offers a variety of rental vehicles to choose from. Whether you're in need of a car just for two or a few, you’ll find plenty of options.

You’ll find most agencies supply a large selection of economy or compact cars along with a variety of mid to full size SUVs. Jeep Wranglers are also popular, but usually a little harder to snag. And of course, luxury SUVs can also be found, but limited in availability. You can also rent a scooter for the day should you feel like a fun little zip around the Grace Bay area.

In Turks and Caicos, you'll find that most rental cars are automatic, which is one less thing to worry about if you’re a little apprehensive about driving on the left side of the road.

The majority of vehicles we’ve rented have been right hand drive. Though we have, on occasion, had left hand drive cars. You can always ask if it’s an option at pick up, but from our experience, it’s taken no time at all getting used to the right hand drive cars.

Choosing the Right Vehicle for Your Turks and Caicos Adventure

Your choice of vehicle depends on what you have planned during your stay and who’s coming with you.

Do you plan to stick to the main attractions in Providenciales or do you prefer to head off the beaten path to explore more remote areas? If you know your plans ahead of time, this will help in choosing the best vehicle for your vacation.

Economy or Compact Cars

These little “emoji” sized cars as we like to call them, are perfect for couples looking to travel around Provos main attractions and beaches. They are the most cost effective option and are ideal for two adults.

We usually lower the back seats and pack the back with our cooler and beach chairs when heading off for a day of adventures around the island.

SUVs And Jeeps

If your itinerary includes exploring more remote beaches or rugged terrains, such as Malcolms Road Beach or North West Point, an SUV or Jeep is your best bet. Some of the more off the beaten path roads are plagued with potholes and you need a higher vehicle to navigate.

SUVs are also great for two couples or a small family. Plenty of room and comfort for everyone. Plus extra storage space in the back for all your beach gear if you’re planning some epic beach days.

Jeeps are also just fun on the island. Who doesn’t feel cool driving one around town! If you do want rent a jeep, best book well in advance, they book up fast and frequently.

Mini Vans

For families, consider a minivan (or an SUV) for extra space for passengers and beach gear. 6 – 10 passenger vans are typically available at most rentals.

We always recommend you call to confirm, even after booking, as this is a popular rental option for families and large groups.

Luxury Vehicles

For those looking to add a touch of luxury to your trip, there are high end vehicles available that offer both comfort and style.

From Tesla’s, suburbans and pick up trucks, there’s a variety of fun and upscale vehicles available to rent in Providenciales.

Special Requirements For Your Car Rental

Beyond the make and model, some travelers may need to inquire about special requirements for their rental vehicle.

Families traveling with little ones can rest easy knowing that baby and child car seats are available from most car rentals in Turks and Caicos. But please, confirm availability when you book. You’ll want to ensure you bring your own should you be told they have been reserved by other customers.

Also, while navigating the islands is relatively straightforward, those who prefer GPS navigation should note that due to the small size of the islands and sometimes inaccurate road map data, GPS units are not commonly provided.

We recommend using your smartphone or downloading a free app such as Maps.me to help you navigate your adventures.

What To Expect From A Rental Car In Turks and Caicos

Rental cars in Turks and Caicos may not always be as pristine as those you might find in North America. The salty air and island conditions contribute to quicker wear and tear, meaning many vehicles will have minor cosmetic imperfections, like dings and scratches and even a little rust.

However, this doesn't affect their functionality. It's quite normal here, and rental agencies ensure that all vehicles are well maintained and reliable for your safety and comfort.

Remember, the charm of island life often lies in its laid back and imperfect nature, which, on occasion, extends to the rental cars as well.

Where To Collect Your Rental Car

We recommend collecting your rental car at the airport when possible. It's the most straightforward way to begin your Turks and Caicos adventure, avoiding additional taxi fees. Plus, the convenience of having your car right from the start means you can head straight to your accommodation or begin exploring immediately.

Upon landing at PLS, you'll find that several rental car options are available right on site. Companies like Grace Bay Car Rentals, Island Life Jeeps and Scooter Bobs offer fast and streamlined pick up services right outside the arrivals terminal, making it easy to get on the road quickly.

However, not all rental companies have their fleet parked at the airport. Some require a short shuttle ride to an offsite location where you'll complete your paperwork and pick up your vehicle. While this might seem like a slight inconvenience, these shuttles are quick and free, ensuring you're on your way without much delay.

Grace Bay Options

For those planning to stay mainly in the Grace Bay area and only need a car for part of their stay, there are rental options such as Avis and Grace Bay Car Rentals within walking distance from many of the central resorts.

This can be a convenient choice if you're looking to explore the island for just a day or two.

Booking Your Turks And Caicos Rental Car

Booking rental cars in Turks and Caicos is as straightforward as it is anywhere else in the world. Whether you prefer the convenience of online booking or talking to an agent, you'll find that car rental agencies in Providenciales can accommodate both.

Should you have any concerns or questions not answered on booking platforms, then definitely pick up the phone and call. It’ll give you peace of mind knowing you’re getting what you need when it comes time to collect your vehicle.

Conclusion

As you can see, renting a car in Turks and Caicos is relatively straightforward and shouldn’t cause you any concerns. You’ll have a variety of agencies to choose from and a vehicle to best suit your travel needs.

For those of you looking to truly explore Providenciales, renting a car allows you the freedom to explore at your own pace and at a much lower cost than if you were to hire taxis.
